Section B

A

The British National Health Service was set up in 1948 and was designed to provide equal basic health care, free of charge, for everybody in the country. Before this time health care had to be paid for by individuals.

Nowadays central government is directly responsible for the NHS although it is administered by local health authorities. about 83 percent of the cosplayt of the health service is paid for by general taxation and the rest is met from the National Insurance contributions paid by those in work. There are charges for prescription and dental care but many people, such as children, pregnant women, pensioners, and those on Income Support, are __________ from payment.

Most people are registered with a local doctor who is increasingly likely to be part of a health center which serves the community.

As the population of Britain gets older, the hospital service now treats more patients than before, although patients spend less time in hospital. NHS hospitals—many of which were built in the nineteenth century — provide nearly half a million beds and have over 480, 000 medical staff. The NHS is the biggest employer in Europe although Britain actually spends less per person on health care than most of her European neighbors.

During the 1980s there was considerable restructuring of the Health Service with an increased emphasis on managerial efficiency and the privatization of some services . At the end of the 1980s the government introduced proposals for further reform of the NHS, including allowing some hospitals to be self-governing, and encouraging GPs to compete for patients. Patients would be able to choose and change their family doctor more easily and GPs would have more financial responsibility. The political questions continue of how much money should be provided to support the NHS and where it should come from.

1. We can know from the first paragraph that ______________.

A. the original aim of the NHS was to provide equal basic health care for everybody

B. people didn’t have to pay for health care since the NHS was set up

C. patients were charged for receiving health care before 1948

D. the NHS was an organization which gave free advice to villagers

2. All the following statements about GPs are true except that they ____________.

A. take care of the local people’s health

B. often take part in competitions to see who is the best

C. work under high pressure nowadays

D. have more responsibilities than before

3. What does the underlined word “exempt” probably mean?

A. tired       B. different        C. safe      D. free

4. The biggest problem for the NHS is ______________.

A. many hospitals are too old to be used

B. some services are in the charge of individuals

C. more and more patients go to GPs for treatment

D. there is not enough money for further reform

Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial education got lost in the ‘wash up’. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.

At school the children are taught to add up and subtract but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account — let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.

Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum.

As the Personal Finance Education Group points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to 11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft as a way of extending their spending power. Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school.”

The UK has been in the worst financial recessionfor generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.

1. The passage is mainly about _____________.

A. how to manage school lessons B. how to deal with the financial crisis

C. teaching young people about money D. teaching students how to study effectively

2. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that __________.

A. the author complains about the school education

B. pupils should not be taught to add up and subtract

C. students have been taught to manage their finances

D. laws on financial education have been effectively carried out

3. The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _________.

A. instruct the pupils to donate their pocket money

B. promote the connection of schools and families

C. ask the government to dismiss the parliament

D. appeal for the curriculum of financial education

4. A poll is mentioned to ___________.

C. make the readers aware of burden of the parents

D. illustrate some people are strongly against the proposal

Chinese people are caring and friendly people. They show that it is easy for them to be your close neighbor, to be like a brother, a sister, a mother or a father. They smile easily, and laugh and reacted with honest emotion.

In contrast, my visit to England, Germany, Canada, and traveling in my own home, the United States left me with the impression that people there prefer to be left alone.___________ Possibly eight of ten would not return a smile to a stranger, and they might even frown at your forwardness.

However, it seems to me that the Chinese are friendly and helpful to strangers regardless of whether they are their own countrymen or form other countries.

People in Beijing often volunteer to help me to get in or get out of a taxi. Being in my 80s, with weak legs and poor balance, I tend to move a little slowly. Passers-by invariably smile and sTOP to offer assistance. Everyone I speak to while walking smiles and greets me. ___________

China has an abundance of goodwill compared to the United States. Chinese outdo Americans in overall day-to-day friendliness to acquaintances as well as to strangers. ___________ People I have met in different activities in my daily life have given gifts to me in various ways. It makes no difference to them that giving gifts is not a common practice among Americans, even between close friends and relatives. As for myself, I am a poor shopper when it comes to buying gifts and never know what to give. I tell people so, and yet they never quit giving me gifts. Their generosity is so endearing.

__________ Pedestrians frequently step out in front of moving vehicles. Cars cut each other off with a minimum of clearance. But I see or hear of no “road rage.” People show great self-control. Chinese drivers are defensive drivers. They constantly watch other vehicles and pedestrians. They want no contact with either!

Questions 7 through 9 are based on the following passage.

The works of Shakespeare and Wordsworth are “rocket-boosters” to the brain and better therapy than self-help books, researchers say this week.

Scientists, psychologists and English academics at Liverpool University have found that reading the works of classical writers has a beneficial effect on the mind, catches the readers’ attention and triggers moments of self-reflection. Using scanners, they monitored the brain activity of volunteers as they read works by William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, T.S Eliot and others.

They then “translated” the texts into more “straightforward”, modern language and again monitored the readers’ brains as they read the words.

Scans showed that the more “challenging” prose and poetry set off far more electrical activity in the brain than the more pop versions.

Scientists were able to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and record how it “lit up” as the readers encountered unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentence structure.

This “lighting up” of the mind lasts longer than the initial electrical spark, shifting the brain to a higher level, encouraging further reading.

The research also found that reading poetry, in particular, increases activity in the right hemisphere of the brain, helping the readers to reflect on their own experiences in light of what they have read. The academics said this meant the classics were more useful than self-help books.

The research shows the power of literature to shift mental pathways, to create new thought, shapes and connections in the young.

Questions:

According to the research, what effect does reading classic books have?

What does poetry do to readers’ brain?

According to the research, what is the power of literature?

Questions 10 through 12 are based on the following passage.

W: Hey, are you busy lately?

M: Yes, I am sorting up my notebooks. It’s a mess.

W: Why not try the Cornell Notes?

M: The Cornell Notes?

W: The Cornell Notes is a noting method that provides a systematic standard for organizing notes. The student divides the paper into two columns: the noting-taking column is twice the size of the key word column. The student should leave two inches, at the bottom of the page.

M: What does the notes consist of?

W: The notes usually consist of the main ideas of the text or lecture, and long ideas and sentences are avoided; symbols are used instead. To assist with future reviews, relevant questions are written on the left.

M: What then?

W: Then, within 24 hours of taking the notes, the student must write a summary in the bottom five to six lines of the page. This helps to increase understanding of the TOPic.

M: I see. I will try it next 百度竞价推广ester.

Questions:

10.What do the Cornell Notes offer?

11.What should be left at the bottom first?

12.Where should relevant questions be written?
